What is Harmony (ONE)?

Harmony is a layer 1, EVM-compatible blockchain that uses the Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT) consensus mechanism. Harmony is also a proof of stake chain through its proprietary “Effective Proof of Stake” model designed to prevent the common problem of large validators having too much control of a blockchain. Rather than sticking with one “monolithic” chain, Harmony uses multiple “shard” chains that are kept secure by randomly assigned validators. The $ONE token is Harmony’s native asset and is used for transaction fees and staking.

Our take on Harmony

Harmony has a robust list of positives and a solid list of negatives. On the “pro” side of things, we appreciate Harmony’s tangible action toward preventing validator centralization and wish more blockchains would follow their lead. Harmony has also leaned heavily into a culture of empowering individual prosperity through its platform, something that we are massive fans of. That said, the Horizon bridge exploit in June 2022 seemed to have a greater impact on its community than expected. Harmony’s action toward helping those affected was certainly admirable, but the bridge attack seemed to demoralize so many in the ecosystem that usage is a fraction of what it used to be. We’re rooting for Harmony and we hope it can lean into its cultural and technological strengths to rise from the ashes.
