Fascinating Facts About Sea Horses

Contrary to many other fish species, sea horses pair for life. During mating season, they engage in an eight-hour courtship dance which includes spinning around, swimming side by side, and changing colors.

Sea horse males carry the pregnancy. Females deposit up to 1,500 eggs in the male's brood pouch. The male fertilizes the eggs and carries them until they hatch, which can take two to four weeks.

Sea horses swim upright and use a small fin on their back to propel themselves. Their pectoral fins, located near the back of the head, are used for steering. They're not strong swimmers and often rest with their prehensile tails attached to coral.
