Parade's Humble Beginnings
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade started in 1924. Originally called the Macy's Christmas Parade, it aimed to celebrate the holiday season and showcase the store's expansion.
From Live Animals to Balloons
The first parade included live animals from the Central Park Zoo. In 1927, balloons replaced animals due to the latter's frightening effect on children. Felix the Cat was the first balloon.
A Helium Spectacle
Early balloons were filled with air, but helium use began in 1927. Notably, balloons were initially released after the parade until the 1933 introduction of return address labels for rewards.
Wartime Balloon Rubber
The parade was suspended from 1942 to 1944 due to World War II. Macy's donated the balloon rubber to the war effort, contributing over 650 pounds of scrap rubber.
First Televised Parade
The parade was first televised locally in 1946 and nationally in 1947, the same year it was featured in the movie 'Miracle on 34th Street,' cementing its national significance.
Innovative Balloon Technology
Through the years, balloon technology has evolved. Today's balloons can have built-in cameras, LED lights, and are made of polyurethane instead of the traditional rubber.
Parade Route Changes
The parade route has changed multiple times. The current 2.5-mile route was established in 2009, ensuring a path that showcases New York's iconic landscapes and landmarks.
Unseen Balloon Mishap
In 1957, a downpour filled Popeye's hat balloon with water, soaking parade-goers as it tipped over unexpectedly.
