Understanding Gantt of Gantts

A Gantt of Gantts provides a macro view by consolidating multiple project timelines. Useful for managing portfolios, it highlights dependencies and resources across projects, enabling integrated schedule analysis.

Start by creating individual Gantt charts for each subproject. Ensure tasks, dependencies, and milestones are clearly defined. These will form the building blocks of the master Gantt chart.

In Microsoft Project, create a new file for the master project. This overarching file will link all subproject Gantt charts to display an aggregated timeline, revealing cross-project interactions.

Under Project tab, choose 'Subproject'. Insert each subproject Gantt chart into the master. Link interdependencies among subprojects if needed, ensuring a cohesive Gantt of Gantts.

After linking, timelines from subprojects appear on the master Gantt. Adjustments to subproject timelines automatically update the master, reflecting real-time progress across the portfolio.

Create a shared resource pool to manage resources across all projects. This prevents overallocation and provides a comprehensive view of resource utilization in the Gantt of Gantts.

Utilize custom fields and filters to analyze data within the Gantt of Gantts. Leverage macros for complex cross-project reporting, surfacing insights not visible in standalone Gantt charts.
